The book is helpful for those unusual things that crop up. It is also good for the basics.

No book can teach everything that there is to know about this amazing program or its counterparts in the adobe suite. This book goes over pretty much anything you can do with Illustrator CS5, and help you familiarize yourself with its tools. You also get little exercises to practice. It's a good way to learn if you're on your own and need to tame this program.

I've set this one aside as I've decided to concentrate my limited free time on mastering Photoshop. Although this book and CD package is loaded with great hands-on tutorials, I'll probably use it more as a reference book when I need to work with vector art. Shelves: educational-non-fiction. At the time of this book purchase, I enjoyed working through it. It's one of those books that I like to keep on my shelf.

Most of this sort of information is available on the internet now. Adobe also offers free tutorials with their programmes. Mar 28, T. As a part-time graphic designer I'm always looking for short-cuts or ways to make my work be taken to the next level.

Chop full of exercises. You can start at the beginning or jump to what your curious about. I have the kindle version, but I read apparently the paperback falls apart very easily. This is a book for school This was the easiest and best way to learn AI CS4. Great book. Well organized, well written. I thoroughly enjoyed it. Great introduction to Illustrator.

The CDROM included with the book has many easy to follow projects that makes vector-based drawing a snap. Jan 12, David Luna rated it really liked it. I feel comfortable working in Illustrator now. I already had experience working in Photoshop, so the UI was not too foreign to me. The lesson artwork is quite cheesy but you do learn. Feb 10, Steve Burdette rated it it was amazing. No better guide on Illustrator than the one from Adobe.

Dec 06, Steven Tomcavage rated it liked it. Typical how-to book, not ground-breaking, but very helpful if you're looking to learn Adobe Photoshop. Comfort Level. Reading this because I want to learn Illustrator, and make vector-based digital art. Participation is optional. I further assigned the user some tasks, and the results were quite to my satisfaction. The author has spent lengthy time discussing various different concepts in chapter 1, the information has nothing to do with getting hands on with the software. In fact, the information is way too technical to be suitable for its "Dummies" title. I would recommend this book to those who wish to get hands on with Illustrator, which is an excellent piece of software to learn after you have reasonable skill with Photoshop.

And I must say that this book was well worth the money. It provides enough detail and good examples to get you started with Illustrator. You will not be disappointed. It guides you step by step from selecting, aligning, transforming and editing objects to drawing with the pen and pencil tools. Then you begin working with color, type and layers, all very good chapters. Then you start the more advanced topics, blending colors and shapes, working with brushes, and applying effects, which was my favorite topic.

Moving on you will apply appearance attributes, work with symbols, learn to integrate with other Adobe products and finally consider output to printers. I downloaded the trial version of AI CS4 and ordered this book to see if I a non-artist with no experience with this software could learn to use it well enough to create decent looking covers for work projects. The book is well laid out and got me up and working right away. The directions are clear and easy to follow. It is also lots of fun to see what I can do with this program.

As a complete novice, I cannot assess how helpful this book would be to an experienced user, but it does a first-class job of making an extremely complicated program usable by a beginner. This is a good book if you are a learn by doing type person. I like the layout of the book, easy to follow.

The pictures are in color. You get an introduction at the beginning of each lesson. In the introduction, you are given a time estimate of how long it will take to complete each lesson. At the end of each lesson is a review of what was taught in the lesson. I am nearing the halfway point of the book, and I am stilling enjoying it.

My money was well spent. I have had the program for a while but never used it. This book went over a lot of functions and how to use them. It is just about the many things that the program can do, it will not teach you how to be a designer or web developer it just shows how to use the many feature of the program.

It is great I would recommend it as the first book to learn the features and then on to a more detailed book. I tend to learn better with an instructor, so I was a little apprehensive about the classroom in a book series.

But I was very impressed. Lesson are planed and mapped out very well and it's easy to fallow along with the lessons on the disc. I have some other books that are more like user manuals. They're great, but they couldn't help me figure out how to get started. I would highly recommend this book for someone who has no experience with the software and is ready to learn.

I love this series of books - they are so helpful and easy to use. However, I bought this on kindle and although the content is great, there's no accompanying CD so the exercises aren't easy to do.
